Assassin Snail (Clea helena) – Freshwater Pest Snail Control

Assassin Snail, commonly known as Clea helena or Anentome helena, is a fascinating freshwater snail valued by aquarists for its natural ability to prey on unwanted pest snails. Unlike algae-grazing aquarium snails, Assassin Snails have a carnivorous feeding behaviour and actively hunt other snails in the aquarium. They can help reduce populations of common nuisance species such as ramshorn, bladder, and Malaysian trumpet snails.

Its distinctive cone-shaped shell features attractive yellow and dark brown bands, making it both a functional and decorative addition to a freshwater aquarium. Assassin Snails can be suitable for planted aquariums because they generally do not feed on healthy aquatic plants. They often burrow into sand or fine substrate while searching for food and may become more active when hunting or feeding.
